China's SAIC Motor Opens New Direct Shipping Line to Speed up Overseas Expansion
As Chinese carmakers rapidly expand into overseas markets, a vessel carrying 1,000 vehicles produced by SAIC Motor, China's largest auto manufacturer, set off from Ningde, Fujian Province, to Mexico's Lazaro Cardenas on Wednesday, Shanghai Securities News reported.
The vessel, operated by SAIC Anji Logistics, is carrying MG-branded cars made at SAIC Motor's plant in Ningde, the report said on Thursday. The voyage shows that the group has opened a direct self-operated maritime route from the southeastern Chinese province of Fujian to Mexico.
The 7,500-nautical mile voyage is expected to take 23 days, shaving at least three days from the passage compared with leaving from other Chinese ports, the report said, citing Wang Zemin, general manager of SAIC Anji Logistics.
SAIC Motor's Ningde plant was completed and went into production in September 2019, with a CNY5 billion (USD724.5 million) investment in the first phase, according to the report. With Asia's largest final assembly workshop, the plant has an annual production capacity of 300,000 vehicles.
Driven by electrification, China's auto exports jumped 54 percent to 3.1 million vehicles last year from 2021. The country surpassed Germany to become the world's second-largest exporter of vehicles just behind Japan, according to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.
Shanghai-based SAIC Motor ranked first among carmakers with exports of 906,000 vehicles last year, up 52 percent from 2021, the CAAM said.
MG, a British car brand acquired by SAIC in 2007, has sold a total of 65,000 vehicles in Mexico since the brand entered the market in October 2020.
