Parents and their children enjoy on-site music being played at the new campus of Shanghai Children's Library on Saturday, the city's Aesthetic Education Day.

A series of engaging and interactive activities were held at the new campus of Shanghai Children's Library on Saturday, the city's Aesthetic Education Day.

The activities were designed to help children feel the scientific, humanistic, and artistic beauty from reading, and help inject vitality into Shanghai, which is gathering pace to construct a children-friendly city, according to the library.

Children of different age groups participated in activities, including reading club, designing book covers, comic art exhibition, and watching theater performance to enjoy the beauty of Chinese culture, music, picture book, and intangible cultural heritage.

A children's story reading accompanied by string trio playing was held in the evening. Many parents and their children said it was a fresh experience to enjoy on-site music while reading in a library.

Shanghai Children's Library is one of the earliest provincial-level children's libraries in China. Since its establishment in 1940, the campus on West Nanjing Road downtown has become an icon of childhood reading for generations.

In July 2022, the new campus at the Suzhou Creek's waterfront area in Putuo district was opened to meet the diverse reading needs of a wider range of children.
