Shanghai's old industrial area Yangpu District uses digital, smart tech to develop new industries
Shanghai's central Yangpu District is developing three industrial clusters with output values of over CNY100 billion (USD14 billion) each, namely the new economy, smart manufacturing and the creative industries, to revive the old heavy industrial area through digital and smart technologies, Yicai learned during a recent visit.
The new economy hub is home to internet giants such Meituan, ByteDance, Bilibili and China Communications Construction, said Wang Tao, head of the industrial department of the Yangpu District Development and Reform Commission. The district government is also investing in other major fields such as artificial intelligence, health and low-carbon.
The district, which lies along the Yangpu river that runs through Shanghai, is already home to cutting edge firms such as urban landscape lighting provider Luoman Lighting Technologies and game developer Paper Games.
Luoman has set up a new digital energy department, is providing landscape lighting from distributed renewable sources and is exploring the digitalization of its business, said Deputy General Manager Zhang Xiaofeng.
Luoman is in the process of acquiring UK immersive media firm Holovis International to expand its footprint in virtual tourism. The two parties already run a joint venture that develops virtual reality travel experiences for clients such as Legoland, planetariums and museums.
Paper Games is committed to using traditional Chinese cultural elements in its games to educate young people overseas about Chinese culture, said Lu Wei, head of public relations.
Paper Games, which boasts 400 million players worldwide, owns the rights to many popular games including dress-up game Nuan Nuan series, dating game Mr. Love: Queen's Choice/Mr. Love: Dream Date as well as the action game Project: The Perceiver.
