Chinese team applies AI in dynamic control of industrial fermentation process 2025-05-13

A research team at Shanghai Jiao Tong University said it has successfully applied artificial intelligence technology to the industrial fermentation dynamic control process, significantly improving the production efficiency and precision of biochemical reaction operations.
The AI control system ManuDrive, developed by the team led by Li Jinjin, has achieved dynamic regulation of the industrial fermentation process. It replaces the manual regulation work of human engineers and significantly improves regulation efficiency and precision by sending operation instructions through AI.
The optimal fermentation plan can reportedly be generated in real-time via ManuDrive. The control instructions can also be adjusted promptly, greatly increasing the output of fermentation products and significantly enhancing the factories' production stability and operation efficiency.
"With the in-depth application of AI technology in the biological fermentation process, the production of plants is gradually shifting from the 'trial-and-error mode' relying on experience to the 'intelligent mode' driven by data," said Li. "It not only reshapes the original production process but also is expected to trigger a far-reaching technological revolution in biological manufacturing."
Relying on the innovative algorithm architecture, ManuDrive only needs over a dozen graphics processing unit cards and just 5 percent of the data volume required by traditional AI models to achieve continuous and accurate inference and prediction, Li noted. In addition, due to deep compatibility with domestic computing servers, firms must not worry about the high build and maintenance cost of computing infrastructure and can quickly deploy and debug the entire system, Li added.
The breakthrough can significantly reduce companies' capital investment in computing resources and factories' smart transformation costs, allowing small and medium-sized enterprises to deploy an efficient "AI industrial brain" at a low price, Li pointed out.
