Suzhou Creek dragon boat tournament to open with record participation 2025-05-22

The 21st Shanghai Suzhou Creek Dragon Boat Invitational Tournament is set to take place from May 24 to 25 at the Brilliant City Mengqing Garden water area in Putuo district.
The year's tournament is the largest over the past decade, with 1,078 participants representing 58 teams set to compete across five categories: Elite, open, university, high school, and public.
The international lineup has expanded to 12 teams, featuring dragon boat enthusiasts from countries and regions such as the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Australia, and Canada. Additionally, a team of journalists from Germany, the United States, Switzerland, Hungary, and Singapore will compete, bringing a unique perspective to the event.

On the local front, teams from seven cities in Jiangsu province — Nanjing, Wuxi, Changzhou, Suzhou, Nantong, Zhenjiang, and Taizhou — will compete in the elite and public categories.
The competition format includes 22-person dragon boat races for the elite and university groups, while the open, public, and high school groups will feature 12-person races. In addition to the 200-meter straight race, the elite and open groups will also participate in a 100-meter sprint.
On May 25 at 8:45 am, online platforms of the General Office of the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, The Paper, Putuo district administration of sports, and other entities will live-stream the event, allowing viewers to watch in real-time via mobile devices.
In addition to the dragon boat races, the event will feature a series of related activities. On May 24-25, Mengqing Garden area will offer a one-stop experience featuring traditional Chinese culture, intangible cultural heritage, sports, and cuisine.
On May 24-25 and May 31-June 2, the 1000 Trees shopping area will host a market and outdoor plaza performances. Immersive stalls will also be lining the riverside walkway, inviting residents and tourists to partake in the festivities.
