Local hospitals in Shanghai embrace domestic healthcare developers 2025-05-22
A great dominance of domestic medical equipment
Leading local hospitals in Shanghai are pushing cooperation with domestic scientific companies to boost the research, development and application of China-made medical products and services.
At the ground-breaking ceremony for Ruijin Hospital's Minhang branch recently, officials said the new hospital will closely work with domestic companies and 90 percent of devices and equipment at the facility will be made in China.
The new branch is located at the Greater Neo Bay, a high-tech zone in Minhang District to drive the city's ambition to become a scientific innovation center with main focus on the biomedicine, artificial intelligence, high-end equipment and new sectors like the digital economy, low carbon and metaverse.

Mainly serving companies and research bodies in the zone and residents of neighboring communities, the new hospital, with 500 beds, will have one out-patient and emergency center, one comprehensive service building and a clinical research building.
"The new hospital will be built into a high-end research body, dedicated to medical equipment development and innovation. Domestic equipment manufacturers will be able to move their laboratories and workshops into our hospital to do R&D along with doctors, who will actively participate in the entire process of domestic equipment development like a high-end radiation facility, surgical robots and an imaging facility," said Ning Guang, president of Ruijin Hospital.
Domestically-developed AI application
Apart from medical equipment, top local hospitals are also teaming up with domestic companies to boost medical AI development and adoption.
Zhongshan Hospital has worked with Shanghai United Imaging Intelligent to jointly develop and introduce six medical intelligent applications to boost its smart hospital and streamline its medical service.
All the applications are a result of deep cooperation between doctors, scientists and engineers. They have been used in many departments, greatly improving medical efficiency and quality, the hospital said.
The intelligent system shows doctors the 3D reconstruction image of a patient's blood vessel during surgery at Shanghai's Zhongshan Hospital.
Smart agent for radiology, which can detect 37 types of abnormalities in a single scan while supporting imaging interpretation, voice interaction and automated reporting;
Smart agent for interventional surgery, which can offer 3D reconstruction of blood vessels and give intelligent surgery guide for doctors as well as reduce doctors' radiation exposure during surgery;
Smart agent for open surgery, which combines digital twin technology and assists doctors to do precise surgery positioning without VR (virtual reality) glasses, and understands and implements doctors' orders to operate equipment and do information checks during surgery;
Smart agent for electronic medical record, which can help doctors improve record-writing efficiency by 75 percent and reduce the time from 20 minutes to five minutes;
Smart agent for customer service, which offers patients answers for various consultation and health education;
Smart agent for quality control and management, which offers closed-loop management on imaging quality, medical document checking and automatic reporting of 15 critical diseases.
The intelligent system assists doctors during surgery.
