Shanghai's airports prepare for summer surge with enhanced services   2025-07-01

As China's summer travel season kicks into high gear, Shanghai Pudong and Hongqiao International Airports are bracing for a significant influx of passengers. Between July 1 and August 31, the two hubs are projected to handle 24.55 million travelers—a 7% increase over last year—alongside 150,000 flights. To manage the surge and elevate the passenger experience, Pudong Airport is introducing a suite of innovative services, while both airports roll out seasonal retail and dining promotions.

Travel Comfort Enhanced
Pudong Airport's upgrades prioritize convenience and relaxation. Travelers can now unwind in 13 rest pods or freshen up in 11 shower rooms, with a capsule hotel slated to open soon. Budget-conscious passengers need not worry—the airport has introduced a free overnight rest area equipped with sofas, recliners, and 24/7 amenities like charging stations, convenience stores, and dining options.

Flight delays, a perennial travel headache, are getting a gourmet makeover. In partnership with 11 airlines, Pudong now distributes meal vouchers redeemable at over 100 airport restaurants, replacing the era of bland boxed meals with diverse culinary choices.

The “Pule GO” mini-app lets passengers order meals—even from restaurants outside security—for robot-assisted delivery to their gates. Meanwhile, a new online lost-and-found system allows travelers to check for missing items digitally before making a trip to the terminal.

Smoother Transits
International travelers will benefit from 24/7 operations at customs, immigration, and security checkpoints in the international and Hong Kong-Macau-Taiwan departure zones, alongside extended services like self-check-in, bag drops, and tax refunds. Transfer times have also been streamlined, with domestic-to-domestic connections cut to just 60 minutes and international routes optimized to 75–90 minutes.

Pet-Friendly Perks and Summer Deals
Pet owners receive dedicated support, with exclusive check-in counters and pathways to keep them and their furry companions together throughout the journey.

Beyond practical upgrades, both airports are launching summer promotions, including luxury and retail discounts up to 50% off, dining specials, and gift-with-purchase offers—adding a touch of indulgence to the travel experience.
