Dragon boat racing takes folks from the office to the water 2025-07-01
Despite searing heat, 33 teams of amateur rowers competed in a dragon boat race last weekend at the Shanghai Aquatic Sports Center in Qingpu District. The event was held in celebration of the 104th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China. Nearly 700 office workers participated from companies including Covestro, ExxonMobil and Baosteel.
Dragon boat races have taken place for more than 2,000 years, but didn't begin as a modern international sport until 1976 in Hong Kong. The organizer of this event says it has now been held for six years as they provide more office workers a chance to engage in physical activities. They also arrange table tennis, soccer and badminton competitions each year that attract nearly 5,000 office workers.
Shanghai is currently home to more than 75,000 foreign invested companies that contribute approximately 25% of the city's GDP and about 60% of its imports and exports.
