From Existential Photography to Revolutionary Legacy 2025-07-15
Acclaimed photographer Torbjørn Rødland has his first solo exhibition (in China) at Yuz Museum from July 12 to October 12. Titled "Songs for the Sun," it features more than 20 photographs and video works created between 2005 and 2023. The exhibition aims to highlight the artist's surreal, meticulously crafted, and psychologically charged photography that delves into the complexities of human nature and desire.
One of the highlights is the piece called "Citrus Glove No. 2," which was created during the coronavirus pandemic.
In a striking thematic contrast, Long Museum at West Bund has a new exhibition named "Revolutionary Art". It'll be open from July 13 to November 2 and commemorates the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.
This exhibition showcases more than 150 thematic artworks from various periods since the 1930s, including oil paintings, prints, sculptures, sketches, and posters. Among them, the oil painting "Hard Times" is one of the highlights. It portrays the struggles and triumphs of the Workers' and Peasants' Red Army during their formative years. Created by Zhang Hongxiang in 1973, this work was acquired by Long Museum at an auction in 2003, marking the beginning of its endeavor to collect Red Classic masterpieces.
All elementary, middle and high school students from across the country gain free admission by presenting their student ID.
Though divergent in theme, both exhibitions speak to art's enduring role in interpreting history, questioning reality, and shaping cultural consciousness. While Rødland's photography distills quiet, personal moments into universal questions, "Revolutionary Art" celebrates the sweeping narratives of a nation in flux.
