Shanghai draws curtain on world record-breaking ancient Egypt exhibition 2025-08-19

After a 13-month run at the Shanghai Museum, a world record-breaking exhibition on ancient Egypt closed last Sunday.
On Top of the Pyramid: The Civilization of Ancient Egypt, which opened in July last year, set new world records for visitor numbers (more than 2.77 million) and revenue (over CNY760 million, or USD105.9 million). It was also viewed online in excess of 30 billion times.
Highlights included the world-famous gold death mask of Tutankhamun. The show also showed the latest archaeological finds from the famed Saqqara site, home of the first pyramid to be built in Egypt, including a recently discovered wooden coffin.
The exhibition was also the largest ever held in Asia devoted to ancient Egypt. It brought together 788 relics, 95 percent of which was on show for the first time in Asia, drawn from seven major Egyptian museums such as the Cairo National Museum.
Due to high demand, the organizers decided to keep the exhibition open round the clock over its final seven days.
