Shanghai's Heping Library shortlisted for top international award 2025-08-20

Heping Library in Shanghai's Hongkou district was nominated for the Public Library of the Year Award 2025 on Aug 18, the only library from an Asian country among the three shortlisted applicants.
The nomination was announced at the 89th World Library and Information Congress in Astana, Kazakhstan. Renowned as the top prize for libraries internationally, the award is conferred by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions.

Heping Library is located within Heping Park in Shanghai's Hongkou district.
Established in 1927, the IFLA is the most influential international organization in the field of libraries, comprising institutions and academies worldwide.
The Baker & Taylor Public Library of the Year Award is for recognizing the newly built library of the year that is functional, sustainable and innovative.
As Shanghai's first 24-hour park library, Heping Library stands out as a beautiful contextually inspired library with nicely integrated indoor and outdoor spaces. The library is nestled within Heping Park and is programmed in a way that visitors are given the feeling of being in the middle of a garden while visiting the library.

The library spans an area of 10,000 square meters featuring four themed halls, one art gallery and a central green space. The library is renovated into a green library fully integrated into the park's ecosystem while preserving its original structure.
Energy conservation and emission reduction are achieved through methods such as installing photovoltaic panels on the roof, bringing natural light through floor-to-ceiling glasses, and facilitating airflow by utilizing ventilation corridors.
The library installations are highly digital, represented by a booking system for available spots and a variety of online services. It also provides a customized, immersive cultural experience for different groups of visitors.
Data shows that since its opening in April 2024, the library has welcomed a total of 2.6 million visits. It houses about 150,000 books and processes readers' licenses for over 7,700 pieces.
