Shanghai holiday spending hits 79.6b yuan   2025-10-12

Shanghai recorded 79.6 billion yuan ($11.17 billion) in online and offline spending during the eight-day National Day holiday that ended last Wednesday, up 3 percent year-on-year, according to data from the Consumer Market Big Data Laboratory.

During this year's holiday, which ran from Oct 1 to 8, major business districts in the city posted a 10.2 percent year-on-year growth in sales revenue. Among them, East Nanjing Road, West Nanjing Road and Zhongshan Park reported increases of 23.2 percent, 22.7 percent and 29.4 percent, respectively, the data showed.

Active spending by inbound travelers boosted tax refund-related sales revenue by 7.2 percent, with most purchases focused on sportswear, electronic products and international brands.

Consumption enthusiasm for services, retail and leisure activities remained high in Shanghai during the holiday. Data from Chinese on-demand service company Meituan showed that the city ranked first nationwide in leisure service consumption, both in orders and spending, according to ThePaper.cn.

Boosted by a series of benchmark activities and consumption coupons across the city, Shanghai's five night-economy landmarks saw consumption rise 15.3 percent compared to the same period last year.
