Shanghai's transport hub taking shape   2025-11-13

The final segment of the beam slab in the main station building of Shanghai East Railway Station is successfully placed on Nov 11, marking the completion of the concrete structure.

Shanghai's second-largest integrated transportation hub reached a major construction milestone on Nov 11, as the main concrete structure of the Shanghai East Railway Station was topped out at 11:20 am, marking the transition to curtain wall installation, steel roofing, and interior finishing work.

Located in Pudong district's Zhuqiao town, about 5 kilometers from Terminal 1 of Shanghai Pudong International Airport, the hub spans over 1.3 million square meters, with the high-speed rail station alone covering 160,000 square meters.

"This marks a pivotal moment in our construction timeline," said Lu Peiren, on-site director of the Shanghai East Railway Station project management department of China Railway Shanghai Group Co. "We have completed half of the construction of the station's main building. This progress follows the completion of the station's underground part in May."

Scheduled for completion in July 2027, the new transportation hub will serve as the eastern counterpart to the Hongqiao transportation hub in western Shanghai. A pioneering feature among China's high-speed rail stations is its dedicated aviation module, which will facilitate transfers between rail and air travel at Shanghai Pudong International Airport.

The one-stop integrated transportation hub will combine national railways, suburban lines, metro services, and aviation facilities, with interconnected waiting areas enabling smooth transitions between various transport modes.

The architectural design draws inspiration from Shanghai's city flower, the magnolia. The station's main building features three levels above and three below ground, with 15 platforms and 30 railway lines.

"We faced challenges in coordinating multiple specialized teams and managing intricate structural elements when handling such a large-scale comprehensive facility," said Tao Jie, Party secretary of the Shanghai East Railway Station project of China Railway 24th Bureau Group. "We've implemented a systematic approach, dividing construction into strategic zones and employing advanced technologies and smart equipment."

Zhang Yimin, deputy chief head of Shanghai Construction Group's integrated transportation hub construction command at Shanghai East Railway Station, highlighted the project's technological innovations. "We've deployed cutting-edge solutions, including BIM modeling and digital sand table simulation, to address construction challenges," Zhang said.

The hub will connect to major rail arteries in the future, including the Shanghai-Suzhou-Nantong railway and the Shanghai-Hangzhou high-speed railway, facilitating greater integration within the Yangtze River Delta region.
