Shanghai Food Safety Federation launched an “Honest Campaign” on Thursday calling for honest and transparent operations in supermarkets, convenient stores, hypermarkets and dining venues to ensure food safety.

Coming 10 days after the new food safety rules, the campaign singles out food safety standards that touch on issues of most concern. Supermarkets, convenience stores and hypermarkets are required to highlight food that is close to its expiry date and to sell such items at a discount. Food storage conditions and the destroying of expired food must be videotaped and made accessible to the public.

Those who violate the rules will be warned and must make corrections as soon as possible, or face a fine of 5,000 to 50,000 yuan (US$725 to US$7,250). In serious cases, offenders may be suspended and have their business licenses revoked. The bakery chain Farine was suspended last week for allegedly using expired flour, and its four executives have been detained.
