Shanghai to escape the worst   2017-07-31

SHANGHAI should escape the worst effects as two typhoons merge and head toward the city today, forecasters said.

Haitang, the 10th typhoon of the year, is set to make landfall in southeast China’s Fujian Province this morning, packing winds of 15-20 meters per second. Tonight, it will merge with what remains of Typhoon Nesat, and move north. People living on the coast have been warned to brace for gales, but there will be little effect in downtown Shanghai, according to the city’s weather bureau.

Instead, the city will see the usual scattered thunderstorms expected at this time of the year. By tomorrow, hourly precipitation in some districts may reach 40 millimeters.
