Tao Xidong, Institute of Sociology, Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences The remarkable first China International Import Expo (CIIE) was successfully held in Shanghai from November 5 to November 10, attracting the participation of 172 countries, regions and international organizations, more than 3,600 exhibiting enterprises and more than 400,000 domestic and foreign buyers. By holding the world’s first import expo at the national level and taking the initiative to open market to the world, China demonstrates her attitude and position against trade protectionism, and support for economic globalization and trade liberalization. The Expo also reflects China's self-confidence and accountability in expanding reform and opening-up and promoting economic globalization. President Xi Jinping attended the opening ceremony in person and delivered a keynote speech. He declared, "The Chinese economy is not a pond, but an ocean”, "China’s door will never be closed. It will only open still wider", "China will not stop its effort to pursue higher-quality opening-up! China will not stop its effort to pursue an open world economy! And China will not stop its effort to pursue a community with a shared future for mankind!” These powerful words convey China's confidence, determination, responsibility and accountability in firmly supporting the free trade and the multilateral trading system, in building an innovative and inclusive open world economy, and promoting the building of a community with a shared future for mankind. General Secretary Xi Jinping's speech attracted wide attention and enthusiastic response from the international community. For example, the former economist of the World Bank and Kenyan scholar Mwangi Vajira stated that the CIIE showed China's driving force in promoting economic globalization and building an open world economy. In today's Internet era, facilitating the interconnection and free trade of the world economy is the objective law of human economic and social development. For an economy, the road of openness, cooperation, inclusiveness and win-win is the broad road for seeking development. The CIIE global public platform built by the Chinese government marks the transition from "Selling Made-in-China Globally" to "Buying Globally from China's Market ". It will not only inject new impetus and create new engines for China's higher-quality development, but also will build new platforms and create new opportunities in promoting the development of an open world economy and in sharing China's open market with other countries in the world. It will be a win-win outcome for both buyers and sellers. According to China’s official data, on a year’s basis, the first CIIE has reached a total of USD 57.83 billion intent transactions, more than a quarter of which are those for intelligent and high-end equipment. The CIIE has presented the most sophisticated, cutting-edge and representative products and services in the world to worldwide enterprises with a view to facilitating trade, expanding market and enjoying the fruits. But what needs to be stressed that the CIIE has invite enterprises from 35 least developed countries to participate and provide two free booths for each country, supporting them to share the opportunities in China's market, participate in economic globalization and work together to promote the building of an open world economy. In short, the China International Import Expo aims not only to build a global economic interest community of interconnection, open interaction and fair trade, but also to build a more open, inclusive, balanced community with a shared future for mankind beneficial for all.
